Right now...
I just finished up Marbles #1:
...and now I'm working on Marbles #2:
...you can see where it's not quite finished--the two marbles on the lower right-hand side are still in a rough state. I'm hoping to finish this piece up sometime in the next two (or three) weeks. One way or the other, it should be finished by the end of July at the very latest.
I'm planning on doing four of these canvases, which are 50" x48". I actually dreamed that I was painting this piece--although in my dream, it was a layer of marbles with a child's face behind it (kind of creepy, huh?). This first canvas obviously does not include the child's face, but hopefully one of the four other canvases will have that. Or maybe not. Hmm...
It was fun putting this piece together--first I had to find about ten pounds of marbles (but sheesh, you can buy ANYTHING online), and then I had to figure out a way to light them. Luckily, I had some extra photo frames lying around my studio, so I was able to sandwich a layer of marbles between two pieces of plexiglass.
I also just finished up The Doll Series, a series of paintings and photographs of tiny doll heads.
This series started with these creepy-assed "Mickey Mouse Club" dolls my sister found at a flea market in St. Louis. From there, I collected various others at flea markets in Missouri and Connecticut. I was looking for dolls with a few common features: shimmering eyes, plastic hair (hard to find!), and moveable eyelids; it also seemed like the older they were, the weirder they were.
These paintings are in two sizes--16x20, and 24x36. Here are the first nine, if you want to check them out:

Click here to see the whole series. I also took a bunch of photos as well. These have been rich subjects to explore--but frankly speaking, I'm glad to be moving on to something else after staring at those little glass eyes for two months...
